Rice prices 'to keep on rising'

Rice prices are set to keep rising as demand for the staple is outstripping production, the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) has said.

The Philippines-based body said in its Rice Today publication that more research was needed in how to increase rice productivity.
The price of rice has risen by as much as 70% during the past year, with increases accelerating in recent weeks.
Several rice-producing countries have put curbs on exports in recent weeks.

<!-- E SF -->
'Research needed'

"Longer term demand-supply imbalance is clearly indicated by depletion of stock that has been going on for several years," said Sushil Pandey, agricultural economist at the IRRI.

"We have been consuming more than what we have been producing and research to increase rice productivity is needed to address this imbalance."
The institute said several factors were behind the rise in rice prices.
Land for producing rice and irrigation water is being lost to industrialisation and urbanisation.
The growing appetite among Asia's burgeoning urban middle class, especially in India and China, for meat and dairy products is also leading to less land for rice production.
Factors such as the flooding in Indonesia and Bangladesh and recent cold weather in Vietnam and China have also hurt production, it said.
Export restrictions are in place in major rice producing countries such as India, China, Vietnam and Egypt
Rice is the staple food for about three billion people worldwide.
The prices of soybeans, corn and wheat are also near historic highs.

I wonder what this will do to the price of Sushi?

Re: Rice prices 'to keep on rising'

Given that your sushi rice was grown in Arkansas or California, you'll barely notice the increase--especially since the rising cost of saltwater fish--from stock depletion--will overshadow it.

I bought a 25lb bag of rice at Costco yesterday, it was $16.00. A 25lb bag of washed pinto beans was $14.00. Guess I need to find someplace that sells them in larger quantities.

$16 for a 25 pound bag of rice from COSTCO? That is NOT cheap at all. Two weeks ago I bought the calrose 50 pounds bags for $15 each. But there is no more any more. So it's not merely a matter of price, it's a matter of availability.

Rough rice on commodity market now trades at $220 per ton. So I guess a fair retail price should be below twice of that, 0.44 per pound, or $11 for a 25 pounds bag.

Get the old stock before the new comes in and is marked up. 5 days ago, Monday, I bought two 25 lb bags of rice at Costco for about $8 per bag.

$220 per 2,000 lb ton is $0.11 per pound. Three times that wlould be $8.25 per 25 lb bag.

My bad. I guess the rough rice price is $22 per 100 pounds on the commodity market. Thailand jasmine rice was traded as high as $760 per ton two weeks ago.

I bought a few 20 pound pags of Jasmine rice, which is my favorite, for 11 dollars each at walmart the other day. Bases on this info, I think it would be wise to buy a few more. I am looking onto long term storage, probably 5 gallon buckets with mylar liners and oxygen absorbers.

We will feel like fools in a couple years for not buying at this price. I would rather spend my 20 dollar bills on 40 pounds of rice at this point than a SAE.

I think it is a much wiser investment, although I still am actively accumulating silver, I want to get my food preps, survival gear, guns and ammo, gardening supplies, ect. pretty much in order before I buy any more silver.

It will give me a tremendous sense of security knowing I have food, supplies to set up shelter if mine is unnhabitable, and enough guns/ammo to protect myself in times of need - as opposed to a pile of silver that may or may not be beneficial to me in times of need.

I made a mistake on my rice bag. It isn't a 25 lb bag, it's only 20 lbs! I don't know about all of the different types, but this stuff is called "Basmatti". That is the type of rice. DAAWAT is the brand name of the rice, product of India. I guess maybe that explains the high price?

Basmati costs a lot. Personally, I think Jasmine is the best. I just made a good amount of rice in my new rice cooker.

Cooked the rice. Added 1 can black beans, 2 cans okra & tomato mix, some curry blend spices, 1 can coconut milk and let it simmer for 15 mins.

This is easy to make, tastes great, and has a lot of fiber and nutrients, protien, carbs.

I am vegetarian so stuff like this is a staple in my diet. I just hope we have electricity when tshtf (well it already is) or i will be doing this over a nice fire instead of a rice cooker.....

I like Jasmine rice, particularly if it has a good fragrance as that usually translates into taste. I'm not a vegetarian and love to eat it with butter chicken (free-range chicken breasts at least), with Pataks sauce straight out of the jar.. yum!

I must disagree though if we're talking hulled or white rice, there is very little fibre at all, most of white rice is carbohydrates, some protein, sugars with some trace elements, but most of rice nutrient is in the bran.

Is Basmati rice supposed to have a strong smell like hay or burlap? I got Royal Basmati rice from Sam's Club and the stuff smells like a barn. I'm not sure if it absorbed the odor of the burlap bag or if its supposed to smell like that.

To me Basmati doesn't have much of an odour normally. I'd say it absorbed the burlap odour. I buy my rice in plastic bags initially.

I don't know. Never tasted the Basmati rice. To me it smells pretty bad and I could not understand why any one would eat this kind of rice.

The package says Premium Aged Rice. On the bottom it says aged to perfection. I do not know what is the definition of "aged to perfection"? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?

I still like the rice that's fresh from harvest. At least not more than one year old. Why would any one like aged rice?

I stocked up two years ago. Most all of the initial rice beans and sugar are still on the shelf. The flour and pasta are long gone. Buy what you use.

I split my large bags of rice into large clear plastic juice bottles for ease of use and storage. I am not sure of the safe keep time on rice but I guess I will find out when and if I need it in the next few years. Any comments???

Rice at Sam's Club locally has increased over $3 a bag in the last month...

I bought 100 pounds last Monday for $17.29/50 pounds....today it is $19.19 for the same amount.

Anyone starting to wonder if food prices will become like gas, going up every few days????

Silverbach, does that bag have a zipper at the top, on the backside? The bag of Basmati rice that I bought at Costco looks similar to yours, but different name brand. Sounds like there is a plastic liner inside to me.

I've been putting everything (rice and beans) into quart mason jars and using the foodsaver to get the air out. In a vacuum I think the stuff will last for 10 years in a cool, dry, and dark pantry.

Silverbach, that's the very same brand of Jasmine rice I bought, except I bought it in brown rice. There was an inner plastic bag.

Realitycheck, I think you got a bag gone bad, because this stuff is really good. As for aging? This explains it: http://news.curiouscook.com/2007/02/...d-and-new.html

So if you like light fluffy rice, aging is a good thing.

I don't care for basmati rice. I does have an odd smell and flavor. I can eat it in Indian cooking because of the strong spices.

I prefer Thai Jasmine rice over every other kind.

Does anyone have any info on which types of rice store the longest and which ones are better nutritionally? I know that brown rice is best for nutrition but it doesn't store well. What type of rice is good both nutritionally and good for storage?

silverblood 04-15-2008 02:40 AM

Re: Rice prices 'to keep on rising'

Supposedly converted white rice has the best tradeoff between nutrition and long-term storage. Not as nutritious or as tasty as brown or wild rice, but better than regular white rice, and stores as long as white rice does. Or so I've heard. Look for the section on rice on this page http://waltonfeed.com/grain/faqs/iia1.html

Sam's sells Uncle Ben's converted white rice. I bought one bag of it to try it a few days ago. It's ok, but not nearly as good as regular long grain white rice, especially not as good as my favorite Thai Jasmine rice. The main defect in converted rice is that the grains have no sticking capability. Each one remains entirely separate from the others when cooked. That makes it lousy for most rice dishes, which are greatly enhanced by the propensity of regular white rice grains to stick together. Personally, I'll forgo the converted rice and "stick" with the good sticky stuff.
